History

Thebe Kgositsile started rapping as a teenager in Los Angeles, and the 2010 mixtape Earl made him the most discussed member of Odd Future before most listeners had seen his face. His mother sent him to a boarding school in Samoa; he came back in 2012 to an audience that had spent two years chanting for his return. Doris (2013) answered that with density rather than spectacle. Everything after it moved inward. I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside (2015) sounds airless on purpose, and Some Rap Songs (2018) cut tracks down to a minute or so of chopped soul loops pushed off the grid, with a monotone buried underneath them. Feet of Clay (2019) and Sick! (2022) kept that scale. He produces much of his own material under the name randomblackdude, and recorded speech from his father, the South African poet Keorapetse Kgositsile, appears on Some Rap Songs. The clipped lo-fi loop he settled into there became a whole lane of underground production.
