History
YNW Melly, born Jamell Maurice Demons on May 1, 1999, in Gifford, Florida, is an American rapper and singer known for blending Southern hip-hop and trap with melodic, R&B-tinged vocals. He adopted the stage name in 2016 as part of the YNW collective and built an early following on SoundCloud before breaking through in 2018 with "Murder on My Mind," a Billboard Hot 100 top-15 single that led to a deal with 300 Entertainment/Atlantic. His mixtapes I Am You (2018) and We All Shine (2019) both charted and went RIAA gold; the latter included "Mixed Personalities" featuring Kanye West, which went double platinum. His debut album Melly vs. Melvin (2019) peaked at number 8 on the Billboard 200, his commercial high point, followed by Just a Matter of Slime (2021). In February 2019, months after his commercial breakthrough, Demons was charged with the double murder of two fellow YNW rappers; his first trial ended in a hung jury in 2023, and he remains incarcerated awaiting retrial, now set for January 2027.
