History

Trip Lee raps with a calm, exact delivery over Southern hip-hop production, and his lyrics are dense with theology, treating doctrine and daily faith with the detail other rappers give to the street. Born William Lee Barefield III in Dallas, Texas, he signed with Reach Records in his teens and became a founding member of 116, originally the 116 Clique, the collective at the heart of the label's wave of Christian hip-hop. His debut If They Only Knew appeared in 2006, followed by 20/20 in 2008 and Between Two Worlds in 2010. The Good Life and Rise pair polished modern beats with hooks built for arenas and verses that stay closely argued. From 2012 he stepped back from touring to focus on church work, serving as a pastoral intern in Washington, then as a pastor in Atlanta and later in Dallas, and he wrote books including The Good Life and Rise: Get Up and Live in God's Great Story. He kept releasing music, such as The Waiting Room and The End. He is recognised for his clear voice, careful wordplay and sermon-like logic.
