History
Playboi Carti, born Jordan Terrell Carter in Atlanta, Georgia (1995 or 1996), started uploading tracks to SoundCloud in 2011 under the name Sir Cartier before rebranding in 2013. After joining the Awful Records collective in 2014 and signing to ASAP Rocky's AWGE/Interscope imprint in 2016, he broke through with his self-titled 2017 mixtape, which hit No. 12 on the Billboard 200 and produced the singles "Magnolia" and "Wokeuplikethis" (featuring Lil Uzi Vert). His 2018 debut album Die Lit reached No. 3, and 2020's Whole Lotta Red became his first No. 1 album, later ranked among Rolling Stone's greatest hip-hop albums. Known for a hazy, high-pitched "baby voice" delivery over minimalist trap and "rage" production, he prioritizes mood and vocal texture over dense lyricism, helping pioneer the rage subgenre. In 2019 he founded the label Opium, home to Ken Carson and Destroy Lonely. His run of guest verses (Travis Scott's "Fein," The Weeknd's "Timeless," Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign's "Carnival") led into his third album, Music (2025), his second straight No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with "Carnival" giving him his first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single.
