History

Koffee arrived from Jamaica with a light, quick delivery that sits between singing and toasting, and a writing voice notable for its optimism at a time when much of the island's chart music was harder and darker. She came up in Spanish Town, started with an acoustic guitar and a tribute song posted online, and the early tracks keep that homemade directness even once full production is added. Toast is the clearest example: a warm mid-tempo riddim, a hook about gratitude, and a vocal that skips across the beat rather than sitting on it. Rapture gave the style a complete statement and made her the youngest winner, and the first woman, of the Grammy for Best Reggae Album. Lockdown moved toward dancehall and afrobeats rhythms without losing the brightness. The tone is what identifies her: a small, bright voice with a rapid syllable count, phrasing that lands slightly ahead of the beat, and lyrics that stay hopeful without turning into slogans.
