History

Morgan Wallen sings country with a drawl thick enough to bend words out of shape, over production that borrows its low end and its programmed hi hats from rap radio. That combination is the reason his records dominated the American charts in the early twenties: the songwriting stays inside traditional country subjects, heartbreak, drinking, small towns and regret, while the tracks are mixed like modern pop, with heavy sub bass, tight vocal stacking and hooks placed early. He came out of Tennessee and broke through with a run of singles that worked equally on country radio and on streaming playlists that had never carried the genre. Whiskey Glasses and Wasted on You show the two settings, one rowdy and one worn out, and Last Night proved how far the formula could travel. His albums are unusually long, built for playlist consumption rather than a side by side sequence, and they have stayed at the top of the chart for stretches rare in any genre. The recognisable element is the voice, cracked, nasal and unmistakably regional.
