History
Smokepurpp is the stage name of Omar Jeffery Pineiro, an American rapper, songwriter, and producer born May 15, 1997, in Chicago to Cuban parents and raised in Miami, Florida, from age three. He started out producing beats and posting them on SoundCloud; when few people wanted to buy his instrumentals, he began rapping over them himself, a shift that also pushed his friend and frequent collaborator Lil Pump toward rapping. He dropped out of high school to pursue music. His breakthrough single "Audi" (2017) went platinum and led to a joint deal with Alamo Records and Interscope. His debut mixtape Deadstar (2017), featuring Chief Keef, Juicy J, and Travis Scott, reached number 42 on the Billboard 200. He followed with the Murda Beatz collaboration Bless Yo Trap (2018), the debut studio album Deadstar 2 (2019), and Florida Jit (2020), which featured Rick Ross, Denzel Curry, and Lil Pump. His sound belongs to the aggressive, lo-fi "SoundCloud rap" and trap/punk rap scene that emerged from Florida in the mid-2010s.
