History

T.I. gave a subgenre its name. Trap Muzik arrived in 2003 as a plain description of where the songs were set, and the word outlived the record to become one of the largest categories in modern music. His delivery is unhurried and conversational, a light Atlanta drawl that sits slightly behind the beat and sounds like a man explaining rather than boasting, which made the harder material land heavier. The production around him ran on skittering hi-hats, orchestral stabs and heavy 808s, and What You Know is the clearest example of that widescreen version of the sound. He then proved he could write for daytime radio without softening the voice: Whatever You Like and Live Your Life came from Paper Trail, which sold a million copies in the United States. Beyond his own records he pushed a generation of Atlanta artists forward, and the title King of the South stuck. Listeners know him by the drawl and the unbothered timing.
