History
Dropout Kings are a rap-metal band from Phoenix, Arizona, built around two voices: a rapper trading lines with a screaming vocalist over down-tuned guitars, electronic textures and trap-influenced rhythms. The group was started in 2016 by vocalist Adam Ramey after his previous band, The Bad Chapter, split up. To stay active he asked rapper Eddie Wellz, whom he had seen performing on YouTube, to record a cover of Linkin Park's Lying from You. The response was good enough that Ramey pulled in former bandmates and musicians from other local groups, first under the name Phoenix Down and by 2017 as Dropout Kings. In 2018 they signed with Napalm Records and released the debut album AudioDope, followed by the GlitchGang EP in 2021 and the album Riot Music in 2023. The band openly draws on the late-1990s nu metal and rap-rock playbook, but frames it with modern production, glitchy electronics and the energy of video-game and internet culture. What stands out is the call-and-response between rap verses and screamed hooks and the heavy, bouncing grooves built for crowds.
