Grunge

Raw quiet-loud alt-rock with fuzz guitars and unpolished drive.

History

Grunge came out of Washington state in the mid-1980s, from Seattle, Olympia and the towns around them, and at first it was simply called the Seattle sound. The local label Sub Pop and bands such as Green River, the Melvins and Mudhoney built it by crossing punk with heavy metal. When Black Flag toured small towns in 1984 playing slow and sludgy, Melvins frontman Buzz Osborne began writing slow, heavy riffs, and producer Jack Endino later described the result as seventies-influenced, slowed-down punk. Distorted guitars, dissonant harmony and lyrics about alienation, addiction and self-doubt set the tone, with the noise of Sonic Youth and Pixies feeding in. The word was first tied to a Seattle band in 1981, when Mark Arm sent the fanzine Desperate Times a mock letter trashing his own band as pure grunge and pure noise. Nevermind by Nirvana broke the dam in September 1991, followed by Ten from Pearl Jam, Badmotorfinger from Soundgarden and Dirt from Alice in Chains, and grunge became the most popular hard rock of the decade. Kurt Cobain's suicide in 1994 drained much of its energy, while post-grunge acts such as Creed and Nickelback carried the sound on.
