History
Silverchair formed in 1992 in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, when childhood friends Daniel Johns (vocals, guitar), Ben Gillies (drums), and Chris Joannou (bass) began playing together as schoolkids, initially under the name Innocent Criminals. In 1994 they won a national demo contest run by Triple J and SBS, which led to a record deal while all three members were still just 15. Their debut album, Frogstomp (1995), driven by the grunge single "Tomorrow," topped the Australian charts and cracked the US Top Ten, making them the first Australian act since INXS to break through in America. Four more albums followed - Freak Show (1997), Neon Ballroom (1999), Diorama (2002), and Young Modern (2007) - as the band's sound evolved from post-grunge into more ambitious, orchestral rock. Silverchair sold over 10 million records worldwide and won more ARIA Awards than any other act in Australian chart history, 21 in total. The band went on indefinite hiatus in 2011 and has not reformed since.
