History
Sponge is an American rock band formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1992 by singer Vinnie Dombroski, guitarists Mike Cross and Joey Mazzola, bassist Tim Cross, and drummer Jimmy Paluzzi, most of whom had played together in the earlier hard rock band Loudhouse. The band's name has an unglamorous origin: before their first show in 1993, a venue owner told them he didn't have enough letters to spell their intended name on the marquee, so they became Sponge. Blending grunge, post-grunge, and hard rock, the band broke through with its 1994 debut album "Rotting Pinata," certified gold by the RIAA, powered by the hit singles "Plowed" and "Molly (16 Candles Down the Drain)." Their 1996 follow-up, "Wax Ecstatic," produced "Have You Seen Mary," later featured in the film "Chasing Amy." That same year Sponge opened for a reunited Kiss at Detroit's Tiger Stadium before roughly 40,000 fans. Despite numerous lineup changes over the decades, with Dombroski the sole constant member, Sponge kept releasing music, reaching a tenth studio album, "1994," in 2024.
