History

Alternative rock started as a catch-all for the rock that came after punk and wanted no part of the mainstream: bands that kept punk's do-it-yourself habits, pressed records on small labels and lived on college radio, fanzines and word of mouth. Before the name settled around 1990, the same music went by college rock in the United States and indie in Britain, where the first national Indie Chart appeared in January 1980. There was never one sound. The umbrella held jangle pop, noise pop, gothic rock, industrial and grunge, and in 1997 the New York Times described the late form as brittle guitar riffing and singers agonizing over their problems until they take on epic proportions. In the 1980s R.E.M. and Jane's Addiction reached major labels while the Smiths stayed independent. Billboard added an alternative chart in September 1988, Jane's Addiction singer Perry Farrell conceived the Lollapalooza festival, and in December 1991 Spin declared that the college niche had moved into the mainstream. The breakthrough of Nirvana, grunge and Britpop made it official. In the early 2000s The White Stripes and The Strokes revived garage rock and post-punk, and emo bands such as My Chemical Romance went multi-platinum.
