History

Counting Crows write long, wordy songs that sound like someone talking himself through something in real time. The band came out of the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 1990s with a roots-rock arrangement style that was unfashionable at the time: acoustic guitar under electric, Hammond organ, mandolin and accordion appearing without irony, and dynamics that build from near-whisper to a full band. The lead vocal is the signature, a hoarse, mannered, frequently overwrought delivery that either pulls a listener in immediately or does not. August and Everything After arrived in 1993 and sold over seven million copies, carried by "Mr. Jones" and "Round Here", two songs about wanting attention and then not knowing what to do with it. Later records kept the same approach without chasing the same scale. "Accidentally in Love", written for a film soundtrack, is the outlier, brisk and uncomplicated. Live, the band rewrites its own material constantly, changing lyrics and tempos night to night.
