History
Dinosaur Pile-Up play loud, hook-driven alternative rock built squarely on 1990s grunge: thick fuzz guitars, quiet-loud dynamics and big shouted choruses, carried by Matt Bigland's voice and songwriting. The band formed in Leeds in late 2007, after Bigland's previous group Mother Vulpine broke up, and took its name from a dinosaur stampede scene in the 2005 King Kong remake. Early EPs and a slot on the BBC Introducing stage at Leeds Festival got them noticed. When the original rhythm section left, Bigland recorded the debut album Growing Pains largely on his own in 2010, and drummer Mike Sheils joined for live shows, later becoming a fixture alongside bassist Jim Cratchley. Eleven Eleven in 2015 was heavier and tighter, and Celebrity Mansions in 2019 pushed the riffs harder still while keeping the humour. The energy is massive and slightly goofy, the DNA is plainly Nirvana and Foo Fighters, and the choruses are written to be yelled back from a crowd at full volume.
