History

Third Eye Blind came out of San Francisco with a trick that defined late 1990s alternative radio: bright, chiming guitar pop wrapped around lyrics about addiction, suicide and bad endings. Semi-Charmed Life is the clearest case, a sing-along built on a wordless hook that most listeners hummed for years without noticing what the verses actually describe. The band's self-titled debut from 1997 sold in enormous numbers and stayed on rock radio for the better part of a decade, and Jumper and How's It Going to Be came from the same run. The sound rests on layered clean guitars, a rhythm section that pushes rather than pounds, and a vocal that slips between rapid half-spoken verses and a wide open chorus, a delivery copied widely by the bands that followed. Later records moved further from radio and the lineup changed repeatedly around the singer. What you recognise is that contrast: melody that sounds like summer over words that are anything but.
