History
Red Hot Chili Peppers formed in Los Angeles in 1983, evolving from a school-friends outfit called Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem into a band that fused funk, punk, and rock into a sound largely their own. The core lineup that carried them to global fame is vocalist Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, guitarist John Frusciante, and drummer Chad Smith, though Kiedis and Flea are the only members present throughout the band's history, with guitarists cycling in and out over the decades. Breakthrough albums Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991) and Californication (1999) produced staples like "Under the Bridge," "Give It Away," and "Californication," and later singles such as "Dark Necessities" kept the streak going. They hold the Billboard Alternative Songs chart record for most number-one singles by any act, have sold over 120 million records worldwide, won six Grammy Awards, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
