History
Elbow write slow. The songs tend to start with almost nothing, a piano figure or a single guitar line, and spend four minutes gathering brass, strings and massed backing voices until the last chorus lands with real weight. The band came up in Manchester and their lyrics carry that origin: specific, unshowy northern English detail, pubs and bus routes and long friendships, delivered in a warm, unhurried baritone that sounds like someone talking to you across a table. "One Day Like This" is the one that got away from them, an unabashed swell of a song now used to close broadcasts and sporting events; "Grounds for Divorce" shows the heavier, blues-shaped side of the same band. The Seldom Seen Kid won the Mercury Prize in 2008 after years of respectful reviews and modest sales, and it remains the record most listeners start with. Listeners recognise them by the slow build, the choir-sized finale and lyrics that are generous rather than clever.
