History

Cage the Elephant started in Kentucky playing scuffed blues-punk and grew into something closer to psychedelic guitar pop without losing the mess. Their first hit came from the early mode, a half-spoken blues about being broke set to a hillbilly stomp, which reached an enormous audience through a video game and made the band's name before most listeners could place their faces. After that each album sanded a different surface: garage snarl, then a Britpop jangle, then the wide reverbed sound of the records that won them Grammys for rock album. The constant is the frontman's delivery, high and frayed at the edges, and a live show built on him throwing himself into the crowd. Cigarette Daydreams shows the other side, an acoustic-led melody with a straightforward ache in it, and Come a Little Closer sits between the two. What a listener recognises is the combination, pop melodies sung as if they were being torn out.
