History
Jane's Addiction formed in Los Angeles in 1985, founded by singer Perry Farrell and bassist Eric Avery after Farrell's previous band Psi Com fell apart. The classic lineup, Farrell, Avery, drummer Stephen Perkins and guitarist Dave Navarro, mixed alternative rock, funk metal and psychedelic rock, and became one of the first alternative acts to reach mainstream success ahead of the 1990s grunge wave. A self-titled live album (1987) caught Warner Bros.' attention, leading to the acclaimed studio records Nothing's Shocking (1988) and Ritual de lo Habitual (1990). Their 1991 farewell tour launched the first Lollapalooza festival, founded by Farrell, which became the blueprint for touring rock festivals still used today. The band broke up and reunited repeatedly: 1997, 2001-2004 (with the album Strays), and 2008 onward, with Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and later Chris Chaney filling in on bass at different points. After a 2024 on-stage altercation between Farrell and Navarro derailed a reunion tour, the band split for good, a breakup confirmed in December 2025.
