History

N.E.R.D was the side of the Neptunes that wanted a band rather than a beat. The production team behind a decade of radio hits put down the drum machine, brought in live players and made In Search Of..., a record running Prince-shaped funk, garage rock guitar and hip-hop phrasing through the same speakers. It sold slowly and grew into a cult record, largely because nothing else was built that way: falsetto over distorted bass, breaks played rather than programmed, songs that change register halfway through. "Rock Star" sits closer to punk than to rap, "She Wants to Move" is a strut held up by hand claps and a bassline with a limp in it, and "Lemon" arrived years later with a Rihanna verse over a beat stripped down to hi-hats and menace. The live shows leaned hard on the band format and on the noise a crowd makes when guitars are involved. A listener recognises them by the falsetto, the dry cracking snare, and a refusal to settle into either a rock record or a rap one.
