History
Alternative hip-hop began in the late 1980s as a refusal of rap's stock roles, the gangster and the club boaster. Its engine was the Native Tongues collective on the East Coast: the Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Queen Latifah, who wrote upbeat, Afrocentric lyrics over eclectic samples and jazz-flavored beats and learned from the politics of Public Enemy. One forerunner is "Beat Bop" (1983) by Rammellzee and K-Rob, produced and arranged by Jean-Michel Basquiat. Critics adored 3 Feet High and Rising (1989) and The Pharcyde's Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde (1992), while the West Coast and the South added Digital Underground, Goodie Mob and OutKast. Gangsta rap took the charts with The Chronic and Doggystyle, and one critic wrote that De La Soul slid from the front of the pack to a colorful dead end. The breakthrough came with Fugees, whose The Score (1996) went to number one on the Billboard 200 and briefly became the best-selling hip-hop album ever. In the 2000s Kanye West, OutKast and Gorillaz pulled the style back into the mainstream, and collectives such as Odd Future and Brockhampton grew out of it.
