History
De La Soul formed in 1988 in Amityville, on New York's Long Island, where high school friends Kelvin Mercer (Posdnuos), David Jolicoeur (Trugoy the Dove), and Vincent Mason (Maseo) began recording together. Their 1989 debut, 3 Feet High and Rising, produced with Prince Paul (often called the group's unofficial fourth member, "Plug 4"), introduced a playful, sample-dense, psychedelic strain of hip hop built on skits, wordplay, and an eclectic crate-digging approach far from the genre's tougher mainstream image. The album was named Album of the Year by NME and helped anchor the Native Tongues collective alongside A Tribe Called Quest and Queen Latifah. De La Soul later won a Grammy for their vocal feature on Gorillaz's "Feel Good Inc." (2006). A striking piece of trivia: due to unresolved sample-clearance and label disputes, their first six albums were completely absent from streaming services for over three decades, only becoming available in March 2023 -- just weeks after Trugoy's death from congestive heart failure.
