History
Jurassic 5 is a six-member American hip hop group that formed in Los Angeles in 1995, growing out of the open-mic scene at the Good Life Cafe. The lineup paired four MCs, Chali 2na, Akil, Zaakir (Soup), and Marc 7, with two DJs, Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark. Rooted in West Coast and alternative hip hop, the group built its name on tight four-part vocal interplay and live turntablism rather than gangsta-rap tropes. Their 1997 EP was expanded into the self-titled 1998 debut on Interscope, followed by Quality Control (2000) and Power in Numbers (2002), which reached No. 15 on the Billboard 200 and featured guests Nelly Furtado and Big Daddy Kane. After Cut Chemist departed, the remaining five released Feedback (2006), including "Work It Out" with the Dave Matthews Band, before splitting in 2007 over musical differences. They reunited in 2013, with Cut Chemist rejoining, and played Coachella and Glastonbury. One trivia note: the name comes from a joke, a friend's mother heard them and said they sounded more like "the Jurassic Five" than the Fantastic Five they were channeling, and it stuck.
