History
Digable Planets are an American hip hop trio formed in the early 1990s by Ishmael Butler ("Butterfly," originally from Seattle), Craig "Doodlebug" Irving (from Philadelphia), and Mariana "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira (from Maryland), who came together in New York and signed to Pendulum/Elektra. Their sound fused jazz-rap with dense samples of bebop and hard-bop records, and their insect-themed alter egos and collective, hive-mind lyrics set them apart from the era's more ego-driven rap. Their 1993 debut album, Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space), went gold behind the single "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," which won the 1994 Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. At that ceremony Butler used his speech to draw attention to homelessness outside the venue, a moment still cited as one of hip hop's more pointed awards-show statements. A grittier second album, Blowout Comb (1994), followed before the group split in 1995; they have reunited on and off since 2005, and Butler later became known for his group Shabazz Palaces.
