History
Trevor Smith grew up between Brooklyn and Long Island and first drew attention in Leaders of the New School, the group that put him on Scenario with A Tribe Called Quest in 1992. His verse there closed the track and made the solo career inevitable. The Coming arrived in 1996 with Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check, followed by When Disaster Strikes (1997) and Extinction Level Event: The Final World Front (1998), records that leaned on millennial dread as a running theme. What he does with a bar is unusual: a brassy, hoarse growl that shifts into double time without losing the pocket, with volume used as punctuation. The Hype Williams videos of that period, fisheye lenses and saturated colour, fixed the look as firmly as the voice. He kept the Flipmode Squad around him through those years and has stayed on other artists' guest verses ever since.
