The Pharcyde
West Coast hip-hop from the 1990s: jazzy electric piano, live upright bass, sparse trap hats, defiant and menacing in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
Style: Conscious hip-hop
History
The Pharcyde is an American hip-hop group that formed in South Central Los Angeles in 1991, though its four core members - Imani (Emandu Wilcox), Slimkid3 (Trevant Hardson), Bootie Brown (Romye Robinson), and Fatlip (Derrick Stewart) - had known each other since meeting as dancers in 1989. Early collaborators included DJ Mark Luv, producer J-Swift, and later J Dilla, then known as Jay Dee. Their 1992 debut, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde, built around the hit "Passin' Me By," became a landmark of alternative hip-hop and was certified Gold; the single hit number one on the US Hot Rap Songs chart and eventually went platinum decades later. The 1995 follow-up, Labcabincalifornia, produced largely by J Dilla, spawned "Drop" and "Runnin'." The video for "Drop," directed by Spike Jonze, was filmed with the group performing in reverse and then played backwards, and is still ranked among the greatest music videos ever made. Fatlip left in 1997, Slimkid3 departed later, and the lineup shifted through the 2000s and a 2008 reunion, before Fatlip, Slimkid3, and Imani reformed as a trio in the 2020s.
