History
Souls of Mischief is a hip hop group from East Oakland, California, formed in 1991 by Tajai, A-Plus, Phesto, and Opio, who met as kids and teenagers at the same schools. They are core members of the Bay Area collective Hieroglyphics, alongside Del the Funky Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, and producer Domino, and appeared on all three Hieroglyphics group albums. Their sound sits in West Coast and alternative hip hop, built on jazzy samples and dense, fast wordplay rather than the gangsta-rap style dominating the Bay Area at the time. Their 1993 Jive Records debut, "93 'til Infinity," became their signature work: the title single went RIAA Platinum and BPI Gold even though the album itself only reached No. 85 on the Billboard 200, and The Source later named it one of the Top 100 Rap Albums. After Jive dropped them in 1995, they kept releasing music independently through their own label, Hieroglyphics Imperium, into the 2010s. In 2017, Gatorade used the "93 'til Infinity" instrumental in an NBA Playoffs ad starring Paul George.
