History
Public Enemy is an American hip-hop group formed in 1985 in Roosevelt, on Long Island, New York, growing out of Chuck D and Flavor Flav's college radio show at Adelphi University. The classic lineup added DJ Terminator X and Professor Griff, with production handled by the Bomb Squad, known for dense, noise-heavy sampling paired with Chuck D's booming, politically charged delivery and Flavor Flav's hype-man antics. Their debut, Yo! Bum Rush the Show (1987), was followed by It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (1988), the first hip-hop album to top The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop critics' poll. Fear of a Black Planet (1990) featured "Fight the Power," written at Spike Lee's request for Do the Right Thing (1989); Rolling Stone later ranked it the #2 greatest song of all time. Public Enemy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020. Chuck D fired Flavor Flav from the group that same year.
