History
Mr. Bungle formed in Eureka, California, in 1985, built from members of two teenage metal bands who had just been kicked out of their groups. Frontman Mike Patton, guitarist Trey Spruance, and bassist Trevor Dunn stayed the constant core through every lineup change. The band started as a death/thrash metal act but within a year began folding in ska, jazz, funk, swing, and disco, often switching styles mid-song, aided by Patton's wildly versatile voice and a habit of performing in masks and costumes. After four self-released demo tapes, and on the strength of Patton's day job fronting Faith No More, Warner Bros. signed the band in 1990. It released three studio albums, Mr. Bungle (1991), Disco Volante (1995), and California (1999), before going dormant. The band's name comes from an obscure 1950s educational film clip shown on Pee-wee Herman's HBO special. In 2020 the group reunited as a thrash outfit, with Anthrax's Scott Ian and former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, to re-record their 1986 demo as a full album.
