History
The Mars Volta formed in 2001 in El Paso, Texas, after guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala left the post-hardcore band At the Drive-In. Their sound fuses progressive rock, art rock, post-hardcore, jazz fusion, and psychedelic rock into sprawling, unpredictable compositions built around Bixler-Zavala's falsetto and Rodriguez-Lopez's guitar work. Early members included Isaiah "Ikey" Owens (keyboards), Jon Theodore (drums), and Jeremy Ward (sound manipulation), with bassist Juan Alderete and Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez joining later. Their debut album, De-Loused in the Comatorium (2003), produced by Rick Rubin, drew wide critical praise, while Frances the Mute (2005) became their commercial peak, going Gold in the US. The 2008 concept album The Bedlam in Goliath, inspired by the band's unsettling experiences with a Ouija board, produced the single "Wax Simulacra," which won the 2009 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. The band split in 2013, reunited quietly in 2019, and released a self-titled seventh album and later Lucro Sucio; Los Ojos del Vacio (2025).
