History
Rage Against the Machine formed in Los Angeles in 1991, when guitarist Tom Morello, fresh off the breakup of his band Lock Up, was introduced to vocalist Zack de la Rocha and bassist Tim Commerford; drummer Brad Wilk completed the lineup. The band fused hip-hop-inspired vocal delivery and funk-metal grooves with hard rock riffs, becoming a defining act of rap metal and rap rock, and paired the sound with explicitly left-wing political lyrics. Their self-titled 1992 debut on Epic Records went multi-platinum, followed by Evil Empire (1996) and The Battle of Los Angeles (1999), both Billboard 200 number-one albums, and the covers record Renegades (2000). A genuinely odd chart footnote: in 2009, a British Facebook campaign pushed their 1992 single "Killing in the Name" to the UK Christmas number one, beating that year's X Factor winner and raising money for the homeless charity Shelter. The band went on hiatus in 2011, briefly reunited for tour dates in 2019-2022, and had effectively disbanded again by 2024. Several members later formed Audioslave and Prophets of Rage.
