History
Dave Matthews Band is an American rock band formed in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1991. Singer-songwriter Dave Matthews, drummer Carter Beauford, and saxophonist LeRoi Moore began working together after a friend urged Matthews to record a demo of his songs; bassist Stefan Lessard and violinist Boyd Tinsley soon joined, giving the group its distinctive sound. Blending rock with jazz fusion, folk, and jam-band improvisation, DMB became known for reworking its songs differently at nearly every live show. Their 1994 major-label debut, Under the Table and Dreaming, went six-times platinum and produced the hit "What Would You Say," featuring John Popper of Blues Traveler. The band won a Grammy in 1996 for "So Much to Say" and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024. A genuine trivia record: with 2018's Come Tomorrow, DMB became the first band ever to have seven consecutive studio albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200. By 2018 they had sold more than 25 million concert tickets and 38 million records combined.
