History
Nirvana formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987, founded by singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic, who met in high school. After cycling through several drummers, they settled on Dave Grohl in 1990. The trio became the defining band of the Seattle grunge scene, fusing punk rock's raw aggression with pop melody and stark themes of alienation. Their debut, Bleach (1989), came out on the indie label Sub Pop, but it was their major-label follow-up, Nevermind (1991), that changed rock music: the single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" pushed the album to number one and is widely credited with ending hair metal's commercial dominance. In Utero followed in 1993. The band disbanded after Cobain's death in April 1994. Nirvana has sold more than 75 million records worldwide, won a Grammy, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 on its first year of eligibility. Grohl later founded Foo Fighters, one of the more unusual afterlives for a former drummer.
