History
Gruntruck formed in Seattle in 1989 when vocalist Ben McMillan and drummer Scott McCullum, both fresh off Skin Yard, teamed up with guitarist Tommy Niemeyer (from The Accüsed) and bassist Tim Paul. Signed to Roadrunner Records, the band released two studio albums, Inside Yours (1990) and Push (1992), blending metal, hardcore, and garage-rock grit into a sound critics and peers, including author Charles Cross, called one of the purest expressions of the Seattle grunge scene. Their single Crazy Love became Seattle station KISW's most-requested song of 1993 and got an on-air endorsement from MTV's Beavis and Butt-Head. Gruntruck also opened European dates for Pantera. Overshadowed commercially by peers like Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, the band later won a notable lawsuit against Roadrunner over its recording contract, a case still cited in music-business law. Gruntruck disbanded in the mid-1990s, reunited briefly in the 2000s, and split for good after frontman Ben McMillan died in 2008 from complications of diabetes.
