History
Local H is an American rock duo formed in 1990 in Zion, Illinois, growing out of a high school band called Rude Awakening led by guitarist and vocalist Scott Lucas. After the departures of the original bassist and second guitarist, Lucas and drummer Joe Daniels reinvented the group as a two-piece in 1993, with Lucas rigging a modified guitar-bass hybrid to cover both roles at once, an unusual setup that became the band's signature. Their 1996 concept album As Good as Dead, about dead-end small-town life inspired by Zion, became their commercial breakthrough on the strength of the single "Bound for the Floor," which hit number five on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. Daniels left in 1999, replaced by Brian St. Clair, who was in turn succeeded by current drummer Ryan Harding in 2013; Lucas has remained the sole constant member. The Chicago Tribune named Local H its 2008 "Chicagoan of the Year" for music, recognizing the band's lasting local legacy despite never repeating that mid-90s chart success.
