History
Tad was an American rock band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 1988 by singer-guitarist Tad Doyle, previously the drummer of H-Hour. Doyle started it as a solo project, releasing the "Daisy/Ritual Device" single on Sub Pop before building a full lineup with bassist Kurt Danielson, guitarist Gary Thorstensen, and drummer Steve Wied. Often cited as one of the first grunge bands, Tad mixed grunge with noise rock and alternative metal, built on Doyle's heavy, distorted sound. Their debut, God's Balls (1989), and Salt Lick (1990, recorded by Steve Albini), toured Europe with Nirvana as an opening act. The more pop-leaning 8-Way Santa (1991) brought two lawsuits over its artwork: Pepsi sued over a single sleeve parodying its logo, and a couple sued over a found photo used as the album cover, forcing Sub Pop to replace it. Major-label albums followed on Giant/Warner Bros. and East West/Elektra before the band split in 1999; they briefly reunited in 2013 for Sub Pop's 25th anniversary show.
