History
Pearl Jam is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990, out of the wreckage of Mother Love Bone after singer Andrew Wood died of a heroin overdose. Guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament recruited guitarist Mike McCready, then found vocalist Eddie Vedder through a demo tape mailed to San Diego; Vedder wrote lyrics to three songs, flew to Seattle, and joined within a week. The band briefly performed as Mookie Blaylock, named after the NBA player, before adopting the name Pearl Jam and signing to Epic Records. Playing grunge, alternative rock, and hard rock, the band became one of the defining acts of the early-1990s Seattle scene. Their 1991 debut, Ten, spent nearly five years on the Billboard 200 and is now 13x platinum. 1993's Vs. sold over 950,000 copies in its first week, a record at the time, and 1994's Vitalogy became the second-fastest-selling CD in history. The band's core lineup - Gossard, Ament, McCready and Vedder - has stayed intact since 1990. Pearl Jam sued Ticketmaster in 1994 over ticket pricing and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, its first year of eligibility.
