History
Hole was an American alternative rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1989 by singer-guitarist Courtney Love and guitarist Eric Erlandson, who met after he answered her classified ad seeking a band inspired by Big Black, Sonic Youth, and Fleetwood Mac. Their sound mixed punk rock, grunge, noise rock, and power pop, anchored by Love's raw, confrontational vocals and lyrics tackling body image, abuse, and sexual exploitation. The lineup shifted often; notable members included drummer Patty Schemel and bassists Kristen Pfaff and Melissa Auf der Maur. Their 1991 debut, Pretty on the Inside, was produced by Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon. Live Through This (1994) went platinum and is regarded as a landmark grunge-era record, while Celebrity Skin (1998) pushed toward a more polished rock sound and sold around two million copies worldwide. Hole disbanded in 2002, reformed briefly in 2010 for the album Nobody's Daughter, then dissolved again in 2013. The band earned four Grammy nominations and sold over three million records in the US, becoming one of the most commercially successful rock acts fronted by a woman.
