History
Everclear is an American rock band formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1992 by singer-guitarist Art Alexakis, who had earlier led the short-lived San Francisco punk act Colorfinger. He recruited bassist Craig Montoya through a newspaper ad, and drummer Greg Eklund joined a couple of years later, forming the classic lineup. The band's sound blended alternative rock and post-grunge with pop-punk hooks and openly autobiographical lyrics about addiction, poverty, and broken families. After the indie debut World of Noise (1993), Everclear signed to Capitol Records and broke through with Sparkle and Fade (1995) and So Much for the Afterglow (1997), both certified platinum, spawning hits like "Santa Monica," "Heartspark Dollarsign," "I Will Buy You a New Life," and "Father of Mine." Alexakis has continued the band under his own leadership through multiple lineup changes since Montoya and Eklund departed around 2003. Everclear also headlined its own nostalgia festival, the Summerland Tour, revisiting the 1990s alt-rock scene it helped define.
