History
Stone Temple Pilots formed in San Diego, California, in 1989, originally under the name Mighty Joe Young before signing to Atlantic Records. The classic lineup - singer Scott Weiland, guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo, and drummer Eric Kretz - built a sound that mixed grunge and alternative rock with a heavier, riff-driven hard rock edge, drawing early comparisons to Led Zeppelin and the Seattle scene. Their 1992 debut Core, powered by "Plush," "Sex Type Thing," and "Creep," went on to be certified 8x platinum, and "Plush" won the band a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1994. The follow-up, Purple (1994), debuted at number one and produced "Interstate Love Song," which spent a record fifteen weeks atop the Album Rock Tracks chart. In a memorable bit of trivia, a January 1994 Rolling Stone readers' poll named STP Best New Band the same month the magazine's own critics voted them Worst New Band. After Weiland's death in 2015 and a brief stint by Linkin Park's Chester Bennington, Jeff Gutt became the band's vocalist in 2017.
