Minneapolis noise punk shriek rock from the 1990s: detuned trebly guitar, dissonant chord scrapes, pounding floor tom, raw and menacing in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

Kat Bjelland, Lori Barbero and bassist Michelle Leon started the band in Minneapolis in 1987. Bjelland tuned her guitar down and played with almost no finesse, on purpose, and her voice could swing from a child's singsong to a full-throat shriek inside one line, which is the thing everybody remembers and almost nobody copies convincingly. Spanking Machine came out on Twin/Tone in 1990. Fontanelle followed on Reprise in 1992, produced by Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, with "Bruise Violet" as its sharpest three minutes; Maureen Herman had taken over on bass by then. Nemesisters arrived in 1995 and the band went quiet a year later. They get filed next to riot grrrl, though the members resisted the label, and the Minneapolis noise-rock scene they actually came from fits better. Short reunions have come and gone since 2014.
