History
Collective Soul is an American rock band formed in 1992 in Stockbridge, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. Their sound blends alternative rock, hard rock, and post-grunge. The band was built around brothers Ed Roland (lead vocals) and Dean Roland (rhythm guitar), joined by bassist Will Turpin, guitarist Ross Childress, and drummer Shane Evans. The name comes from a phrase in Ayn Rand's novel "The Fountainhead," though Roland has said the band had no interest in her philosophy, they "just dug the name." Their breakthrough single "Shine," from the 1993 album "Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid," topped the Mainstream Rock chart after Atlantic Records picked it up. The 1995 self-titled follow-up went triple platinum and produced three more Mainstream Rock No.1s, including "December" and "The World I Know." In 1999, their single "Heavy" spent a then record-breaking 15 weeks at No.1 on that same chart. The band remains active, with a 13th studio album, "Touch and Go," released in 2026.
