History

The band formed in Los Angeles in 1990 around singer Shannon Hoon, who had come out from Lafayette, Indiana and sang backing vocals on the Guns N' Roses Use Your Illusion sessions before his own record existed. The self-titled debut appeared in 1992 and moved slowly until MTV picked up the video for "No Rain", the one with the girl in the bee costume, after which the album turned multi-platinum in 1993. They sit slightly apart from their Seattle contemporaries: acoustic guitars, loose jam sections, a Southern rock and late-1960s folk streak, and Hoon's high keening voice carrying melodies that wander rather than pound. Soup, produced by Andy Wallace, came out in 1995 and went darker and stranger. Hoon died of a drug overdose that October, on tour in New Orleans. The surviving members regrouped years later with other singers.
