History
Mother Love Bone formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1987, built from the wreckage of two local acts: bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard came from Green River, while singer Andrew Wood and drummer Regan Hagar came from Malfunkshun. Guitarist Bruce Fairweather (also ex-Green River) joined in early 1988, and drummer Greg Gilmore soon replaced Hagar. The band's mix of glam swagger, hard rock riffing, and early grunge grit, driven by Wood's flamboyant stage presence, made them one of the most hyped groups in Seattle's late-1980s scene. In 1989 their EP Shine became the first release by a Seattle band on a major label. Their debut album, Apple, was finished by early 1990, but Wood died of a heroin overdose just days before its scheduled release, ending the band. Apple came out later that year and reached No. 34 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart. Wood's death led directly to two major outcomes: the tribute project Temple of the Dog, and Pearl Jam, formed by Gossard and Ament with Eddie Vedder.
