History
Candlebox is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in November 1990. The original lineup featured singer Kevin Martin, guitarist Peter Klett, bassist Bardi Martin, and drummer Scott Mercado; the band's name comes from a lyric in Midnight Oil's "Tin Legs and Tin Mines." Emerging alongside the city's grunge scene, Candlebox is often grouped among the "Big Four" of post-grunge. Their self-titled 1993 debut, released on Maverick Records, sold over four million copies and went quadruple platinum, driven by the singles "Change," "You," "Far Behind," and "Cover Me" - "Far Behind" cracked the Billboard top 20 and stayed charting into 1994. The album's success earned the band a slot at Woodstock '94, opening tours for Rush and Metallica, and Metal Edge magazine's 1994 Best New Band award. Follow-ups Lucy (1995, gold) and Happy Pills (1998) saw diminishing returns, and Candlebox disbanded in 2000 amid label disputes. They reunited in 2006 and have released five more albums since, most recently The Long Goodbye (2023).
