History

Billy Corgan put the Smashing Pumpkins together in Chicago in 1988, with James Iha on second guitar, D'arcy Wretzky on bass and Jimmy Chamberlin on drums. Butch Vig produced the debut Gish (1991) and returned for Siamese Dream (1993), and it was across those sessions that the band's defining method settled: Corgan tracking guitar part over guitar part, dozens deep, chasing not sharpness but a thick wall of fuzz with his nasal, complaining voice pushing through it. The double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995) was made with Flood and Alan Moulder instead, reached number one in the United States and sold in the millions, which is a strange fate for a two-disc set with a harpsichord on it. Adore (1998) swapped live drums for programmed ones and moved the band well away from the grunge label it had been handed. The Pumpkins broke up in 2000 and have since returned in several configurations.
