History
Soundgarden formed in Seattle in 1984 when bassist Hiro Yamamoto and singer/drummer Chris Cornell teamed up with guitarist Kim Thayil, taking their name from a wind-channeling pipe sculpture near Magnuson Park. Drummer Matt Cameron joined in 1986, and after Yamamoto's departure Ben Shepherd settled in on bass, forming the classic lineup. As the first grunge band signed to Sub Pop and then the first signed to a major label (A&M, 1988), Soundgarden helped pioneer the heavy, Sabbath-indebted, alternative-rock sound that broke out of the Pacific Northwest alongside Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. Badmotorfinger (1991) pushed grunge toward the mainstream, and Superunknown (1994) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, driven by the Grammy-winning singles "Spoonman" and "Black Hole Sun." The band split in 1997, reunited in 2010, and released King Animal in 2012. Cornell's death in 2017 ended the group again, though surviving members reunited for a 2019 tribute show and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2025. By 2019 the band had sold roughly 30 million records worldwide.
