History
My Chemical Romance formed in New Jersey in September 2001, when vocalist Gerard Way, who had witnessed the World Trade Center towers fall, decided to start a band with drummer Matt Pelissier; his brother Mikey Way (bass), Ray Toro (lead guitar), and Frank Iero (rhythm guitar) joined soon after. The band's name came from a book title Mikey spotted while working at Barnes & Noble. After the 2002 debut I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, they signed to Reprise Records and broke through with Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (2004), which went platinum. Their 2006 rock opera The Black Parade became their defining work: its single "Welcome to the Black Parade" topped the UK singles chart. A fourth album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, followed in 2010. The band split in March 2013, then reunited in 2019 and toured through 2022-2023, releasing the single "The Foundations of Decay" in between. Known for theatrical, concept-driven records and a goth-punk aesthetic, MCR became one of the most influential rock acts to emerge from the 2000s emo and pop-punk scenes, despite resisting the "emo" label themselves.
