History

Garbage came together in Madison, Wisconsin, around producers who treated the studio as the instrument and a Scottish singer, Shirley Manson, who can move from a purr to a snarl inside one line. Butch Vig, already known for records that defined American alternative rock, brought a sensibility with little interest in live band authenticity: the songs are layered from samples, loops, processed guitars and drum machines, then mixed so the pop hook survives all of it. Only Happy When It Rains reads as a joke about grunge-era misery while sounding exactly like the thing it mocks. Stupid Girl runs on a stiff sampled breakbeat and a bassline that refuses to resolve. I Think I'm Paranoid puts fuzz on top of a chorus clean enough for daytime radio. Version 2.0 pushed the method furthest and took a nomination for Album of the Year. The band is recognised by its texture: grit and shine in the same mix, and a vocal that never asks for sympathy.
